Question

Help answer this question below.

I was forced to have sex when I was 16 with a 36 year old. He told me if I told anyone he would lie, and he did once I told. I am 23 and I still think about this alot. What should I do? I know he still can't go to jail right?

    1. Get counseling for yourself, totally apart from the criminal justice system.

    2. Contact your local rape crisis center hotline and talk to them about this. They will know your local law, and can tell you if the statute of limitations on the assault started "tolling" (counting) from the day of the assault, or from the day you turned 18.

    3. Ask them for their advice on how and where to best report this person, so that if he assaults someone else, you can testify at his trial for that assault.

    4. Ask them also for their advice on what can be done to stop him now. For instance, were you his babysitter? Does he have teen daughters? Was he married, is he married, and does his wife know? etc.

If there is no rape hotline where you live, contact your statewide sexual assault network, like ICASA in Illinois:
    http://www.icasa.org/
If you can't find your state's group on your own, look here:
    http://www.usdoj.gov/ovw/statesexual.htm

You can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline, operated by RAINN, 24 hours a day at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673), or you can search for your local rape crisis center at this page of their website:

    • Another caring answer. I can't add anything to what Ankhorite and Branciforte have said. Read and listen to what they have said.
