Here's what my preist told me when I was Catholic:

The tradition of eating fish on Fridays and not other meat was, strangely enough, for ecomomical purposes.Back when the religion was smaller, most of it's members where poor fishermen. So in order to help their trade, the church decreed that all catholics should eat fish on every Friday.Eventually this was changed to be done only during Lent but it was originally done to help the fishermen's trade.

    • I'm just wondering where you got this information. I'd like to know more about this. This is the first I've heard for this being started for economical reasons.

    • This is an old urban legend. The Church never purposefully orchestrated Lent in order to help out any industry, let alone the fishing industry evident in the very fact that the Church has never MANDATED the consumption of fish on fridays. The law of abstinence simply states that land-dwelling meat is to not be consumed. If one so desires, he can go completely vegetarian on Fridays. Furthermore, the practice of carnal abstinence is very old in the Church and is seen even in the Eastern Traditions where the laws of abstinence are even stricter: no meat, no dairy, no fats, oils or lards... and the fast includes Wednesdays too! Let me guess... according to this poster the Eastern Orthodox Church was lobbied by vegans!?

    • I just had a co-worker say the very same thing that is was an invention by the pope. As I calmly looked back and asked which pope it was he didn't have his name even though he claimed to have done the research himself. *sigh*
