Why do we feel the need to be accepted?

    Because we evolved as social creatures, forced to band together against larger threats to survive, a strong sense of community and social dependency is instilled in us. On top of that, most people are brought up, intentionally or not, with the idea that it is good to conform to society and find your place within the larger whole.

    It is a very 'tribal' mentality taken to an extreme as our 'tribe' grew and grew into a civilization. We are still driven to find our place within the tribal structure even though we no longer need to cooperate as much to survive.
