A group called Badfinger wrote it and performed it first on an album called "No Dice." The first person to make it famous was Harry Nilsson, who performed it on his album "Nilsson Schmilsson" in the 1970s. Anyone else who performed it since -- Mariah Carey, Air Supply, and Whitney Houston, for example -- is also doing just a "cover" of the Badfinger tune.
