As of Oct 2005, the situation is more or less like this:

For casual use (parties, birthday, vacations, etc) is true that film cameras are going to be obsolete soon. In fact, they may be obsolete now. New digital cameras have advanced a lot and now they do not suffer from common past problems that film cameras did not have (e.g. shutter lag, bad quality at high ISO ratings).

For professional use, it depends. Journalist and fashion photographers have all practically gone digital because is much more convienient (the picture can be directly manipulated with publishing software). You can shoot in Pakistan and send it to New York in seconds. Film is still very popular with wedding photographers. In fact, they are the main buyers of film nowadays.

Film will survive for artistic photography. Current film use that have not yet been challenged by digital is the use of mediun and large size film.

The truth is that technology advanced, and probably in ten years all will be digital, maybe with some exceptions (such as artistic work). It will be similar to CD and vynil records. Records are obsolote, and the fact that some DJs use them does not change that.
