Trick question! The simple answer is that if you are exalted, you believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, but it is not this belief which exalts one.

The question is equivalent to "Do you have to breathe air to be a housepainter?" All housepainters breathe air, so the answer is yes, even though it is not the air which makes someone a housepainter -- breathing is just one step of the process of becoming a housepainter.

However, in the case of exaltation, God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost were exalted long before Joseph Smith was born, so the answer has to be that one doesn't have to have any belief in Joseph Smith to be exalted.
