Well yes, generally some sort of put-down which drove me further into my shell. My father was particularly good at this, and spent 40+ years convincing me I was dumb and ugly. I was not popular at high school, (but I did have a couple of close friends), and I can remember one guy on the school bus (he was Mr Popular) sneering at me when I offered a bag of hot chips around. He said "Who'd want one of YOUR chips?" What an insignificant thing to have haunted me for 45 years .... but it was enough to convince me that I was a sub-standard person for most of my life.

    • Thanks Patti; For what it's worth, Mr Popular worked as a bus driver most of his life and has been married several times. I still run into him occasionally and he's as nice as pie....obviously he is oblivious to the trauma he caused me all those years ago!

    • Maybe he just doesnt know how to say "I'm sorry",, After I became a Christian I was haunted by the way I had treated one young man when I was in High School, and I sought him out to ask him to forgive me, but I discovered that he had died the year before. I still feel very guilty about it.

    • That's sad Hemi, but maybe it's his retribution?

    • So very sad to read your experience, but i see humility and honesty in your words, these are qualities i much admire in a person, so you have turned out a very nice person indeed, horrible experiences can be turned around, now you have the ability to understand other people who have had or are having the same experience as you had and this means you can display empathy, an wonderful quality not expressed much these days, thats one more reason this world is in such a state. Well done i much prefer people like yourself rather than Mr Popular.

    • Well done Hemi, it takes great courage to swim against the tide, but you are living proof it can be done.
