Not necessarily. If you must transport a refrigerator on it's side, you need to allow 24 hours in an upright position before starting it up again.

To be on the safe side, I would transport it upright to avoid any potential damage. I just wanted to note, for the record, that it is possible to transport a refrigerator sideways without causing damage, albeit inadvisable.

"Refrigerators should be shipped in an upright fashion whenever possible. If laid down allow 24 hours before restarting. If any unusual noises are heard after startup turn off immediately and call service company. "

Here's a link to a website that shows a guy transporting a refrigerator on it's side with his bicycle! Man, you gotta love that gumption! There are pictures of the guy actually doing this, take a look!

A side note about Freon: Freon is being phased out because of it's harmful effects to the ozone layer. I don't know that any refrigerators being manufactured today that use actual Freon, at least in North America. There are cheaper and more environmentally friendly coolants available. There are, I'm sure, a lot of older, Freon equipped refrigerators out there still living useful lives, however.

    Below is an excerpt from:

    http://fridgedoctor.com/frequently-asked-questions/freon-and-punctures/freon-free-refrigeration.html

    "Freon free refrigeration?

[Q:] I've heard there are fridge’s made in Germany that do not use Freon. Is this true? Where can I purchase one because I don’t want to have any of this poison in my home! Thanks Fridge Dr.

[A:] Actually all new North American household refrigerators don't use Freon any more. The new gas is called 134a and apparently has no ozone depleting substance present, the real reason Freon has been banned.

Freon never did harm anyone. In fact they still use it in puffers to propel medicine directly into the lungs of asthma sufferers. It was just deemed to harm the ozone layer which is still just a theory that many still believe was politically motivated by biased chemical companies for economic corporate greed.

Do we know the long term unforeseen effects of 134a? You may be better off with a chemical we know is not harmful to us. Just my opinion."

Regarding the above excerpt; the lack of concern this guy shows for the environment is no reflection of how the author of this post feels. Personally, I'm glad Freon is being phased out.
