Football (soccer in the USA). It is the world sport. It can be played by anyone with a ball.. No fancy equipment required.

    • I really like soccer and I love to watch it and stuff but I'm just a little concerned that we should just call it the best sport just because everyone watches it. I know thats not among your reasons but it is for a lot of people.

    • It's the best sport because anyone can easily watch it and understand the rules and anyone can learn to play in a matter of minutes.

    • Most of the rules are easy enough to learn but offsides isn't. I once coached youth soccer and offsides was in their offical rule book. So I taught it to my kids and then the refs where soccer dufiouses and never called offsides, when I brought it to their attention they said they had no idea what offsides was an they where not going to call it.

    • You get points because of two things. 1. Football is the best sport in the world. 2. You actually called it what it should be called...football. WTF is soccer? The name doesn't make sense to me. I'm american, and I don't even know why we call it soccer. I don't even know why they call american football just football. You play that sport by throwing a pigskin ball and running...I don't get it.

    • Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but I really hate it when people diss American Football. I never diss original "Football" because I hate remarks, yet I'm going to diss it this time. In Soccer? It's fun to play, but it's one of the most boring spectator sports EVER. I attempted to watch the World Cup and fell asleep several times. All they do is pretty much RUN around, kick the ball back and forth to each other, it gets stolen, the other team kicks it back and forth to their respective teammates, they finally find a seen after 35 minutes into the game and score..it's 1-0..they just kick it back and forth to their teammates all game long pretty much, as the score ends as 1-0. They should make the field shorter, or something, with more scoring. It's so boring and it's mind boggling to think someone can actually enjoy watching it.

    • sports> I like soccer and American football. In soccer one score can change the pace of the game dramatically so its all about the chances of score and less about the scores themselves.

    • thesportguy, I'm not dissing american football at all. I like american football, but I don't get why its called football. I watch football occassionally, or, I used to, but I have respect for that sport, I'm not trying to diss it. I don't wanna diss any sport.

    • Grint> Well I could ask the same question about soccer. Think about it this way, offically speaking you just can't touch the ball with your hands or arms. Now while most of the movement takes place using the feet there is no requirement that you have to use your feet to do anything. Its just a tradition and I don't think there is anything wrong with the name "soccer".

      Valparaiso

by Valparaiso on February 13th, 2007

    • Football makes more logical sense than "soccer" which is just short for "association football" The world's governing body for the game is called FIFA, not FISA. So it's football. Not soccer. And American football should just be called Rugby With Helmets For Sissies and be done with it. I have no problem dissing sports because most of them suck. Except for football. :D

    • The only thing Rugby and American football really have in common is the shape of the ball.

      Valparaiso

by Valparaiso on February 13th, 2007

    • They are both totally uninteresting and and have oblong balls. That's plenty in common :) JK

    • Gridiron sucks. Played it when I was there on holidays, and I did'nt like it one bit! it's to structured, too many protective sissy crap. And! there is no fitness involved, the game takes too long to start again after a play.

      Skip_2_My_Lou

      by Skip_2_My_Lou on April 3rd, 2007

    • The structure is one of the reasons its great. Tons of strategy involved! The protective equipment allows for harder hits and you have to remember that injuries are still very common even with all that equipment on. They may have more but they hit harder because they have that. Also there is fitness but it depends on the position you play and what kind of physical capabilities you have. If you are on the line you need a lot of strength. Sure you don't have to be the fastest guy on the field but we aught to value a variety of different skills from the strength of the line to the speed and agility of the runningbacks.

    • In most cases to enjoy a sport you have to understand the rules (unless it it topless volleyball). For most of us in England we dont know the rules and intriquicies of American football and therefore dont appreciate it. The fact it is so popular in USA and the top sports men get paid so well - implies to me it must be a very entertaining game.
But football rules - its easy to learn, you can play with just a ball and shirts to make goalposts..
It will always be the worlds sport.
Re offside - The rules do keep changing - re is it interfering with play etc. So dont be surprised if people dont get it 100% right. Its the only diffiuclt bit in the sport.

The other great thing is FOOTBALL is for WOMEN to play too. America is one of the countries that leads the way in that. We do get female rugby teams - but not msny - I assume American Football is 99% played by men (appologies if I am wrong).
Football is also played by a very wide age group.

    • Just a comment I must make to The Sports Guy. You say that all Football players do is run around and it is very boring. well let me tell you another opinion of AMERICAN football how you can call it football when the only people that ever kick the ball are specialist kickers that have to be brought on. Until recently usually retired UK Rugby players, Other than that it is all stop and start never ending boredom a bunch of padded guys who spend hours with their heads uo each others asses. How is that interesting. I only diss US footie when you have a go at the REAL game

    • You are all going along with the same sport Soccer.Although I agree soccer is a good sport it is not the best.GOLF is the best because it is
1.the most skillful, creative and fun sport.
      2.Requires concentration,disipline will,strength of charachter.
3.It is the most exciting sport to play and watch, just look at the U.S OPEN FOR Gods sake!!
Where as in soccer you see these overpaid wimps cheating on the pitch and they dont have the discipline either.None can disagree with that

    • If I were a quadrapeligic and doomed to only ever watch sport I would still rather watch footie over golf. Sorry. That said I love to play and I love to watch and I especially love to watch my talented husband in goals on his coed, over 30 team. It is truly the beautiful game. ANYONE can play.
