I don't have THAT many points from moderation. Most of mine are from answers. However, there have been many who got where they are by flagging questions and answers. See http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1919455 , part III for more.

    Here's MY definitions:

Spam/Offensive - should be very obvious, except that asking for points is illegal and should PROBABLY be spam/offensive - I usually flag them Nonsense.

Nonsense - Probably the second most misused of all moderation. I usually do questions only - They are beginning to accept implicit questions (say those that are categorized, and explain a situation, but don't really ask anything), and you have to watch on those to make sure they haven't added an extension in an answer. Foreign language questions, "hitting the keyboard" questions and answers, just things that make no sense. Even so, I'm sure a LOT of people flag these longer questions... They shouldn't. By the same token, those who know they are going to extend using the answer should SAY so before question space runs out. (NOTE: Even if it makes no sense in context as an answer, it's possible it was an accidental comment. Don't flag those, but comment them with the permalink to the answer it's probably a comment for. - No points there... Just being nice.)

Duplicate (which most of mine tend to be) - There are the multiple submit dupes (someone hit submit for the question, it didn't go right away, so they hit submit again, and sometimes again and again and...) For these, you just find the earliest version and flag the others as a dupe of it. If you've been here a while, and have answered or seen enough questions, you begin to recognize duplicates. Sometimes, though, you can't find it. Let it go. It's not worth getting in too much of a tizzy over. (Two ways to search - use the answer search - Type in the question, and see what you get. The other is to use the list provided when you flag. NEITHER search is perfect, and sometimes it's best to cut the question down to keywords. Again, if you don't find the dupe you KNOW is there, let it go.

Wrong Category (there's the potential of a LOT of points here... For me, though, questions should NOT normally be moved OUT of the bag (Outside the bag) - which to me should be reserved ONLY for those questions the do NOT fall into another category - but moved INTO the bag from there, because they may get more responses from those who frequent the categories there.) Be warned, though... SOME people put questions in certain categories for specific reasons, and get VERY upset when they are moved to another category.

BE AWARE that AB-STAFF (Rich, Joel, others) have to ok your flag before it's set and points are given. You will receive an email if the question/answer flag is NOT accepted.

ALSO, even if a flag is accepted, there is the possibility of appeal, where the questioner/answerer (or others) argue for including them, explaining the ideas, etc. The question/answer could THEN be reinstated.

ALSO be aware that if the question/answer is rejected or reinstated, someone else could flag it, and it COULD be accepted. It kind of depends on who is doing the job at the moment at times.

(I've got a suggestion in that once a question is reinstated, that it can no longer be flagged, saving the staff and others time and energy in reviewing it, etc.)

You must ALSO be aware that some question types for Nonsense are NOW being accepted, so it's kind of a fluid flag, and again, probably depends on who is accepting/rejecting flags and their mood at the moment! ;-)

Oh, yeah... And if you moderate WRONGLY too many times, you can be PBed. (Penatly Boxed).

I know... Long answer. But if you are thinking of doing it, you better know what you're getting into!

    • I never really understood the moderation thing under my points. Under moderation, I have 9 under subjects and 45 under points and 78 percent. Exactly what do those numbers mean. I read the AB explanation but still don't understand how the points, etc., work. Would you be so kind?

    • You have moderated 9 questions for 45 points (Mods are 5 points each ONLY as far as I know!). 78% of the q/as you have moderated have been "good flags" (your flag stood). That means that 22% of the time, your moderation didn't go through, or was rejected.
      .
At least this is as I understand the moderation points system.
