MiniDV: Uses 60 minute tapes to record a DV quality video signal. DV (Digital Video) is widely recognised as providing the best picture quality performance at relatively low cost. The "mini" part merely refers to the fact that there are two flavours of tape: a full-size version recording up to 3 hours and the smaller, "mini" version recording up to an hour.

Digital8: Based on the older, analogue Hi-8 tape, this is a DV quality format. It enables users of older Hi-8 equipment to get full digital quality while retaining compatibility with their older analogue tapes. In terms of picture quality there is no discernable difference between Digital8 and DV.

MiniDVD: This actually has two definitions depending upon context, so I'll take them one at a time.

    1) Can refer to a DVD that is recorded on a CD. If you don't have a DVD burner there is software available that will squeeze your DVDs onto a CD-R, but with a potential loss of quality, as CD-Rs have around 1/8 the capacity of a DVD-R. Not all DVD players will play these MiniDVDs.

    2) Can refer to a smaller (8cm) recordable DVD. A few camcorders that take these discs are beginning to appear on the market. Quality is variable, depending upon how much you wish to squeeze on a disc, but even at highest quality is no match for DV.

Hope you get something from this!
