Any advice on someone wanting to recover from a drug addiction?

In college we had a philosophy teacher who shared this with us. "For ten seconds dont think of purple elephant." Of course all we could think of was a purple elephant- except for one guy. When asked how he accomplished the feat- he said "I thought of a blue giraffe."

Consider your addiction a purple elephant. Every thing else is a blue giraffe.
