Because the heat (while it is on) causes food particles (from cooking, frying, etc) to stick to the glass and the flies can smell it (just like they can smell shit) and like every other living creature, they love hanging around food.

A fruit fly landed on my apricot mango yogurt, and I didn't realize it was there until after I put a spoonful in mouth. Perhaps I'll die?
