Some people have a tendency to view immigrants, whether legal or illegal, as outsiders or "foreigners". Even some people whose ancestors were not from the host country wind up with this mindset. It doesn't matter if the person is a law abiding US citizen or even someone on a student visa just trying to complete an education. Case in point: I am German and married to a Native American. Immediately after 9/11, I was in an outside break area waiting for my husband to pick me up from work for lunch. As my husband approached, one of my male co-workers stated, "Everyone whose ancestors aren't from America needs to get the hell out and go back to where they came from!". Then turning toward me he added, "Including you!" My husband heard this and instead becoming physical, (I was so proud of him. Not exactly the diplomatic type...lol) replied to the guy, "I agree with you, and since you aren't a Native American and I am, I'll help you pack your @#$*!" I believe it is a mindset that applies not only to Americans, but to many internationally.

    • I'm 1/4 Cherokee. A friend of mine is half Apache. We were at a rally against immigration at school and a guy said, "We need to send the immigrants home." Now, my friend has very long hair and looks Native American. You can tell just by looking at him. He yelled, "Damn right! Send them all home!" It was quiet for a few minutes.
