Epiphone guitars are not made "by" Gibson. They are however made by Epiphone under licence from Gibson. This means that they use (in most cases) cheaper components and cheaper Korean labour to produce visually similar instruments at a lower cost to the buyer. They are though generally very good quality instruments, and stand up in their own right. Check the specification of any instrument before purchasing. They new "Epi" Les Paul Standard, for example, features solid mahogany and maple construction, and Gibson pickups, to make a very good semi-pro level guitar. Conversely, the Epi "Les Paul" Junior is not actually allowed to bear the Les Paul name, because LP himself does not feel they are of adequate quality - checking the headstock of one of these instruments will confirm the name to be absent, where it is present on the "genuine" Gibson version.

The trick with all brands of guitar is to play one before you buy it. Even Gibson have put out some sub standard instruments in their time (the unavoidable "Friday afternoon" syndrome).

    • Ok, Epi's are made in China, they have "glued up mahogony bodies, they also have chinese made electronics and pickups. Only the most expensive Epi has Gibson pickups and still has a glued up body. Les Paul ,when alive, switched to Epi a long time ago. Around the 1940's. Gibson has owned the rights to the "les paul" since before the trade in camps. Most Epi's either bear the name Les paul or Gibson . Here's a pic of the Junior.
