The protectionist paranoid propaganda being displayed here is enough to make a person lock their teens up in the basement with no internet connection and no visitors and leave them there until they turn 21.

Let's be real folks. While the internet is a wild and unpredictable place, the only real added danger it poses to teens versus real life is the 'unknown' factor. But I do not accept that the risks a site like MySpace poses, warrant dismissing it outright as a resource for teens to use.

I think a more responsible answer is this:
MySpace has its inherent risks just like any other form of interaction. Teens are at risk walking down the street, attending friends' parties, reading their email, the list is endless. The solution is to inform them of the risks and hope that they use your advice.

If I disallowed my teen from using anything that posed a risk to them, I'd have to stop them from using eBay, PayPal, MSN Messenger or AOL Instant Messenger, IRC chat, email, a cell phone...... this is just not going to happen.

I also don't blame MySpace for teens' bad spelling and grammar. This phenomenon has been a fixture of the internet culture since the days of bulletin boards and IRC chat. In other words, they think it's 'cool' to mis-spell on the internet.

Creating factions? Please. There were cliques in school long before the internet was even dreamt of.

Meeting strangers you don't even know? Growing up, we had what were called 'loop lines' (test lines for the phone company to use), where teens would call one number (like 555-1194) and be automatically connected to the person who dialed the matching partner number (like 555-1195). Thousands of people in the Montreal area used to meet up this way. Talk about risky!

Everyone has their opinion, of course, but let's get serious about labelling MySpace as some kind of evil entity that promotes risky behaviour in teens that apparently never existed before.
