Wow... I'm amazed at the ignorance in here. The world is not superficial:

"Most people regard horse racing as a harmless sport in which the animals are willing participants who thoroughly enjoy the thrill. The truth is that, behind the scenes, lies a story of immense suffering.

Approximately 15,000 foals are born into the closely-related British and Irish racing industries each year, yet only a third go on to become racers. Those horses who do not make the grade may be slaughtered for meat or repeatedly change hands in a downward spiral of neglect. Of those horses who do go on to race, around 375 are raced to death every year.

Beneath its glamorous façade, commercial horse racing is a ruthless industry motivated by financial gain and prestige. Cruelty? You can bet on it!"

    • You nailed it right on the head. I'm not really surprised by the answers in here so far as most of these people likely haven't even touched a horse, let alone been trackside or in the stables. Some idiot put you in the red,I marked you up.

    • No problem. It's the truth and actually you just skimmed the surface of it. There's a toll taken on the horses with meds as well. Diuretics are administered before a race. How'd a person like to have a drug put in them to literally make them pee like a race horse ( where the term came from). There are tranq's for transport or stall outbursts. heck, there's death in some trailering to get to different tracks. Those that claim that race horses just love to race are a bit daft. The horse is TRAINED. That's like saying that ALL pitbulls love to attack people. Only the ones that are trained to attack generally do.

    • Here in the UK there is regular dope-testing, and if a horse doesn't want to run, not much you can do, it stays in the stalls!
Most racehorses here are better looked after than a lot of people!

    • There's dope testing here too Smart, for performance enhancers. Not for diuretics though.

    • The horses that don't want to run are physically forced into the stalls, and whipped, they have no option of staying in the stalls in the vast majority of cases.

    • I think your the ignorant one actually.
For a start horses are flight and herd animals, they wouldnt run if they didnt want to and i know that as a fact. I believe some aspects are cruel such as the breeding and whipping. But i bet you all haven thought about the fact that when you drink a glass of milk a cow has had to give birth had her calf taken from her and if it was a male - shot or sold? Over 300 horses die racing a year in the UK and over 900 horses die racing in the USA every year, so its pretty obvious which is worse. I agree with you on the fact that some aspects need to change. But however racehorses have the best training, facilities and medcine available to them and the majority of them are treated like kings. So overall horses love racing because its what they have been bred to do and as it is quite clear they wouldnt race if they didnt want to.

    • The whole "they wouldnt run if they didnt want to" argument is dumb.

"The dogs wouldn't fight if they didn't want to" (dog fighting)
"The blacks wouldn't work on the fields if they didn't want to" (slavery)
"The bull wouldn't fight if it didn't want to" (bull fighting)
