It's hard to use 'good for gaming' and 'not too expensive' in the description of the same computer. It's kind of like saying 'goes really fast' and 'uses very little gas' to describe a car.

But I digress. Shop around. Ask lots of questions. Talk to other gamers. Find out what they have and why they like (and don't like) what they bought and note it. Heck, take a gamer with you when you go shopping. Just don't buy everything they suggest. Buy what you can afford and use them as a guide.

If I was coming with you, I'd be encouraging you to get as much RAM and the best video card and monitor you can afford. The CPU is a factor, but we can get a faster one when prices come down. If you can't afford everything, get a cheap monitor for now and save for a better one later.

    Just my quick thoughts.

    • I would very much disagree with this statement that good for gaming and cheap don't go together. You just have to understand that requirments for gaming are different. Things like duel core processors aren't important, neither is having a huge hard drive. The trick is just not to buy the cutting cutting edge compnents.. Gaming rigs with cutting edge components are not necessary, very expensive and outdate in months anyway. Buying a solid gaming PC can be fairly cheap though.

    • I never said good for gaming and cheap was impossible - I said it was hard. And I never said you had to buy cutting cutting edge components. But you're not going to get by on a typical low end video card or what came embedded on the motherboard. I could have been more specific, but this was just my quick thoughts on the issue. But I did say talk to other gamers. Now I'm really going to go out on a limb and suggest that your dollar would probably go farther if you gave up on the idea of using your PC platform as a gaming rig and just bought a Wii or some other gaming box. You'd get better gaming performance for the dollar than anything you could slap together on a PC.

    • ooooo.. that is out on a limb.. :P I'd have to agree thought that the gap between the types of gaming you do on console and on a PC has narrowed a lot in the last few years. Especially with this latest round of consoles. It really depends on what type of gaming you like. I own a couple consoles, but find myself more interested in MMORPG with friends that i have a better time playing at my PC. For shooters and sports its all about the consoles.

    • Define "cheap" and "good for gaming".
My PC was free (to me) but lacks an AGP slot and I don't feel like shelling out for Vista so I can run DX10. My buddy has a graphics card that cost more than 6 of the 8 cars I have owned, his PC is good for gaming, but not cheap.
I agree with karl that there is the possibility of a happy medium... if your definition of "good" is looser than my buddy's and your definition of "cheap" is loose than mine.
I also agree that a Wii or X-box would be more cost-effective for gaming; a decent gaming rig will cost you at least as much as a PS3, which is overpriced to begin with.
