What do I do? I really like my boyfriend and I would really hate it if the situation came to breaking up with him, but everyone in my family notices that he has a smart attitude. He even has said things that hurt me, but he tells me that he was joking.

Hi smf1709,

Using words to hurt another person is not joking... it is a flagrant display of contempt or disregard. Your family is wise to speak up. You deserve better.

If it were me, I would tell MrSmartAttitude to get his act together; treat me better, now and always or go find someone else to abuse.
