What is a sacrament? A sacrament is a "an outward sign of an inward grace instituted by Christ."

    There are seven Catholic sacraments:

    1. Baptism- where a priest pours holy water on you and annoints your head with chrism (holy oil). This rids the body and soul of original sin and initiates you into the Catholic Church. It is usually performed on infants.

    2. Reconciliation- where you confess your sins to a priest, ask God for forgiveness, and God forgives you. Can be given at any time in life and is repeated many times throughout one's life.

    3. Eucharist- the turning of bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. This sacrament happens at every mass and is why we go to church on Sundays. You usually recieve your first communion around second grade and you continue to recieve as much as possible for the rest of your life.

    4. Confirmation- where the Holy Spirit is given or "sealed" upon you. This completes full initiation into the Catholic Church. A bishop places his hands on you and then anoints the forehead of each with chrism saying: "I sign thee with the sign of the cross and confirm thee with the chrism of salvation, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." Finally. he gives each a slight blow on the cheek saying: "peace be with thee". A prayer is added that the Holy Spirit may dwell in the hearts of those who have been confirmed, and the rite closes with the bishop's blessing. It usually takes place between 7th and 11th grade, but it varies by parish.

    5. Anoiting of the Sick- a priest lays his hands on a person who is sick, blesses them, anoits them with oil, and asks God to restore the person to bodily and spiritual health and to provide spiritual aid and comfort. Sometimes remission of sins is included, sometimes not. Takes place for anyone who is sick, normally seriously ill, but can be given to anyone who wants it.

    6. Holy Matrimony- when a man and a woman are bonded togeather in marriage by God.

    7. Holy Orders- when a man fully enters the priest hood and takes vows to become a priest.

A priest once told me, "sacraments are visable signs of an invisable reality." They help us grow closer to God .
