What do you think of protesters who call themselves “Born again Christians” who stage protests at the funerals of dead soldiers who served in Iraq, and insult their grieving families. Should this type of free speech be protected?

Yes, of course, this free speech should be protected. I think it's deplorable and inherently un-Christian or them, but this is America. The rights to freedom speech and assembly are guaranteed in the Constitution.

Another thing you have to realize is that these idiots are just a small, fringe cult within the Christian faith. They have fixated upon one tiny fraction of what they believe God wants them to do, denounce homosexuality and shame the rest of the country into also denouncing it by linking it to everything they can, including why Americans are being killed overseas. they claim it is some kind of punishment by God. Sounds a little like Pat Robertson, doesn't it? At least these people don't have a TV show!

The Phelps congregation that travels around the country in their bus, preaching that "God Hates Fags" and that these brave men and women who gave their lives for this country were killed because the US allows homosexuals to live open lives (if they only knew!) is pretty insignificant. They number only about 70 people and are mostly part of Phelps' extended family. For instance, his 80 year old wife drives this tour bus! They just have a loud, obnoxious and disrespectful voice, which is why they get press coverage.

If you notice, there is a group about twice the size of Phelps' group that counters and drowns out their hate-speech at every stop. These "angels" are a group of VFW bikers that follow him and his congregation around the country and protect the funeral proceedings from being disrupted. I don't think we really have to worry about Fred Phelps and his "God Hates Fags" crew, as they are a small, inbred group of quasi-Christians that are nothing more than an annoyance and will either disband when he dies (he's pretty old, as well) or just find something else to be angry about.

To try and stop them from doing this legally gives them a level of credence that I would personally not want to see them given. I also would find it a severe disregard for their right to free speech and assembly. I think that would be the worse of two evils.
