From the time they are born and can understand - i suggest about 18 months onwards.

Obviously, you need to use appropriate terms and language for their age and to realize what they can comprehend at the ages of 2, 3, 5, 8, etc.

By not avoiding and thereby mystifying the natural reproduction process, you ensure they grow up confident about this aspect of their lives in the same way they do with school work, riding a bike, playing games, cooking, going to the zoo, etc., etc.

The notion of "age of innocence" is in my view hugely overplayed. We are never innocent (babies are hugely over-demanding, totally inconsiderate, massively attention-seeking, always demanding food and are completely indifferent to others or their needs) and at some point or another, all humans will have to know about the real and sometimes harsh realities of life.

I don't believe in hiding or withholding knowledge from children, just appropriate the language and you will communicate well.
