if you use mozilla firefox, you can use adblock plus, its worked miracles for me. it doesnt only block pop ups but also unwanted adds.

Adblock plus has no inherent anti-popup capabilities, that is built in to firefox it's self. For a superb web experience, switch to Opera Web Browser (with ad blocking) for one month and you won't look back.
