I've used many prototype companies while in automotive. The people I deal with probably wouldn't do a small job for someone though. They will for our company, but they bring in millions from us alone, so they do the smaller stuff to keep our business.

Overall, it will depend on which company you go with that will determine your experience. I think most of them out there are very talented and will do a very good job on whatever you want them to make, but it will probably cost you a very big chunk of money to do it. Depending on the complexity of the prototype, you could be looking at anywhere from $500 to millions of dollars. If you need some more advice, just put a comment on this answer with some questions, and maybe I can help.

    • I have an idea that involves creating an electronic device. Would you have any guess as to the cost of creating a device like this? This device will also need software/firmware to function of course. You answer so far has been helpful as this is my first time using a prototype company.

    • Do you have the electronics designed and they would just need to be manufactured or do you have an idea that needs circuit and software design then? If right now you just have the idea that you want to go ahead with, you're a long ways off from needing a prototype shop. A prototype shop generally will follow your design to make a small number of the item, but the requires a complete design.

    • I suppose you are right... I assumed the prototype shop would take your idea and build a design for you. Are there other companies that draw up your designs first? I basically have the idea and I know what it would look like and how it would function. Would my novice drawings and explanation be good enough for the prototype shop to start with? or would I need to head in another direction first? - Thanks for your information.

    • You would probably need to head to a design shop to do the work, but my guess is that could get pretty expensive depending on the complexity of your idea. A design shop will probably charge you anywhere from $50-$100 per hour. I can't recommend any to you because I'm used to doing the design in our own company and I'm not very familiar with the electronics business, but I'm sure they are out there. I would suggest looking around on the net and making a couple of calls. Even if the places you call don't do what you need, they may be able to steer you in the right direction. Good luck.
