Baseball was develpoed from Cricket, an English game. Cricket has 2 innings but the way it is played the 2 innings can take several days (yes, days). It is a slow moving and boring game.

The Americans changed many rules and created a new game which is known as baseball today. With all the rules changes the 2 innings went by really fast. After some experimenting the players concluded that 9 innings would make the game last a reasonable lenghth of time and not be too slow moving or boring.
