My son and his partner separated when my granddaughter was 14 months old. She will be 4 this month. He still lives in the house (next door to us) whereas mum has moved 9 times since then and has been engaged twice. They have no formal custody arrangements, but generally he picks her up on his way home from work on a Wednesday afternoon and either he takes her back -or mum comes and picks her up - on Sunday evening.
As dad works, she spends most of that time with us. She is bright and intelligent and quite at home with this unconventional upbringing as she doesn't remember it ever being any different. She calls Wednesdays "Daddy Day" and Sundays "Mummy Day". When she is with us she chooses herself whether to have dinner our house or at dad's house - she stays with us Wed/Thursday nights because he leaves for work at 5am, and with him Friday/Saturday nights unless he's going out. There is no love lost between the parents, but this arrangement works well for this particular child.
