Both birds belong to the family Anatidae, but are have distinct characteristics.

The goose (male--gander) is a medium to large bird and makes a honking call. ("True geese" belong to the subfamily Anserinae.) Non-domesticated geese are very migratory, flying from far north to far south. Geese eat a vegetarian diet.

The duck (male--drake) is smaller than the goose and the female often has a call more similar to "quack". (Contrary to popular belief, it does echo.) Ducks belong to several different subfamilies. Almost all domesticated ducks (excluding some in Central America) are descended from the Mallard, so they have very similar forms. Some duck species don't migrate, and some moult before migration, temporarily rendering them flightless. Many ducks eat fish, amphibians, and insects.
