I assume that lung efficiency is the question which the previous answer is it. But to increase the amount of air that can be sucked into the lungs, you would need to smoke for long enough to destroy the inside till it almost a empty lung. I have seen some smokers stay under water a long time but peter out in endurance type stuff. But a good lung is like a good sponge that can hold air long enough to absorb the stuff. Growing up at very high altitudes can do so also.
But seriously, the whole respiratory system must be healthy enough to use the increased lung efficiency.

    • Growing up in high altitudes has nothing to do with being able to take deeper breaths, as a matter of fact your body responds differently because there is LESS concentration of O2 up in high altitudes, so you may exhibt signs of hypoxia and hypoxemia. You aren't getting the same amount of gas diffusion in higher elevations and your bodies receptors try to change your respiratory pattern while in higher altitudes. It takes 48hrs for it to return to normal once you reach normal pressure of 760. Where is all this false info coming from?
