Help answer this question below.

I've been prescribed Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo but I'm out of town and need more. Can I just go to the pharmacy and ask for a refill, or do I need another prescription?

Just to clarify that I am not making any of this up, I am a pharmacy technician and I deal with patients like yourself all the time.

The answer to your question is that it is fine depending on several things. You can generally walk into any pharmacy and ask that pharmacy to transfer your perscription to whichever pharmacy is nearest to you. Before you do anything, however, check with a local pharmacy because each state has its own laws.

You can go to a pharmacy and ask for a refill. They will, what we call, "transfer" your prescription. This will only work if you have refills and if your prescription has not expired. Once its tranferred, it is as if you took the script (prescription) to that pharmacy in the first place. In other words, you'll have to tranfer it back to your original pharmacy once you're back in town.

In the state of Virginia, you can transfer birth control tablets at any time from one pharmacy to another provided that the prescription is less than a year old. Keep in mind that this is not the case with all drugs. For example, controlled drugs (Xanax, Ambien, etc.) can only be transfered from one pharmacy to another only once. That means, once its tranfered, it cannot go back or move to any other pharmacy.

I've had problems with having scripts tranferred from certain military pharmacies and mail order pharmacies, so be on the look out for that.
