Do you think that people who criticize spelling and grammar on AB are helping, or are they discouraging people without those skills from answering?

The problem with this criticism is that you seldom know who writes the questions or who answers or comments them. AB is WORLDWIDE, people. There are a lot of people from overseas whose first language IS NOT English. Hell, there are people from the US and the other parts of North and South America whose first language is not English.

They have questions, answers, insights and comments, too.

The criticism, to me, just shows the rest of the world the arrogance of some Americans. Luckily, it seems that many of them know that it's only a few jerks, and not ALL of us.

    • Those people are choosing to post on an English-speaking site. Part of their motivation may be to improve their English skills. Correction would be helpful.

    • Why do you assume it is only Americans that are correcting spelling and grammar?

    • Oh... I'm not assuming anything... Just seems the majority seem to be (and seem to be buttholes about it). And, while true their motivation may be to improve their English, why are the criticisms I tend to see so harsh?

    • I am in agreement with BigDaddy here. It is the 'harshness' of the criticisms that really gets to me. It is one thing when someone offers 'gentle' help as to how to spell or punctuate something properly. I think that kind of correction can be truly helpful. It is quite another thing when someone is treated like an idiot for their lack of perfection, and I see that a lot on AB. As BD just said about those 'imperfect' around us... They have questions, answers, insights and comments, too.
      Big D... thanks for answering!

    • No problem. Glad I could provide some insight (I hope!) to others.

    • Yes, I agree too! I welcome the diversity, and I would be hard pressed to express myself perfectly in the above stated examples.
