From the looks of it, professional roller derby is currently in the process of being reinvented as "rollersport":

"Over the years, the sport of Roller Derby disintegrated into a farce, a 'production' which barely resembles the high-speed competition that was held pre-1970.

The intention of the new Rollersport is to bring Derby to the 21st Century, by insisting that all competitors solely use inline skates, and by selecting some of world's best skater-athletes. Our intention is to bring back the athleticism, bring on the speed!

The latest serious attempt at skating was the WSL (World Skating League), commonly known as RollerJam, located at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

This group existed from June 1998 to June 2000.

Pageboy Entertainment, (a partnership between Jupiter Entertainment and Bagwell Entertainment), and the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) were co-owners in this next venture. This partnership did a
number of good things for the sport of Roller Derby, by investing millions of dollars in what could have been a spectacular product, but in the long term, they severely damaged the credibility of the sport. This partnership hired a number of nationally ranked speed skaters and instead of taking advantage of this wealth of talent, they highlighted actors and non-talented, overweight skaters to perpetuate a pre-fabricated storyline. RollerJam became a spectacle of bad taste, and was cancelled within 2 years of its inception. Millions of dollars were wasted because of management’s refusal to allow a credible game."

    • It is most definitely still being played! There are teams all over the country. I'm on a roller derby team, its hardcore sport. Roller derby is still played on quads, everyone knows quads are more hardcore than inline!
