DO NOT use coral in a freshwater tank. Freshwater is much lower in minerals than saltwater and will slowly dissolve the coral, thereby changing the chemistry of the water. It will eventually kill the fish. Many corals are also very sharp and can injure fish when they dash around.

If you really want the look of coral, there are many places that sell plastic or resin replicas of coral that are safe for freshwater fish.
