You're reading Is nicotine carcinogenic?
Comments
emilyw, I could not find your quote from the Wikipedia article on Nicotine accessed today on 7/14/2008.
It's important not to confuse carcinogenic with co-carcinogenic. Also, with regards to your Wikipedia quote, there are many chemicals that inhibit apoptosis (pre-programmed cell death) of pre-cancerous cells, but that alone does not earn a chemical the description of "carcinogenic."

science_guy, I too could not find emilyw's quote from that article. On the contrary, that same article contained this quote:
"The carcinogenic properties of nicotine in standalone form, separate from tobacco smoke, have not been evaluated by the IARC, and it has not been assigned to an official carcinogen group. The currently available literature indicates that nicotine, on its own, does not promote the development of cancer in healthy tissue and has no mutagenic properties, but does speed growth and migration of existing cancerous cells, as well as turning some precancerous cells cancerous."
Wikipedia is almost always outdated, because it relies on its readers to edit the information; hence, the data in my previous quote, which contains an obsolete part about the IAR in the first sentence.
