There's a marked correlation between visually focusing on something and hearing sounds. For some people, they hear better with their eyes closed, and for some, they hear better when they focus directly on the object/person making the noise.

You can see the relationship in another way - people turn down the volume on the radio when they're driving and are looking for their next turn. Sight and sound are linked in ways that we're still trying to map out.
