Are you considered married or not married after filing for divorce but divorce is not final?

You continue to be legally married until the divorce is finalized. There is a state of "legal separation" which can be entered into where you remain married, but there is some acknowledgement of the status of separation. I'm not sure if you have to file for that specifically or if it automatically comes with a filing for divorce.
