I think that the term would be offensive to anyone.
It would also be offensive for people of Romanian descent for one more reason: because it is a discriminative and offensive insult which has been used against Romani people (those who came from India). Many Romanian people (descending from the Vlachs of Romania) don't want to be taken for Romani.
Sometimes, sadly, it is not only the need of respect for their own identity, but it could always be racism against the Romani.
But I hope it is a small minority.
Do any of you know the difference between "feminism" and "straw feminism"?

Thank you for the great answer, iwnit. I have learned much from asking the question, and I appreciate your insights.

SelahWrites: you are very welcome! (I gave already points to your question).

I thought that might have been you. Thanks again!

Thankyou so kindly iwnit. Rrom san?
.
We are more hated in Romania than most Americans can even conceive of. I do not believe that bigotry that widespread and violent exists in modern-day America. I might be wrong but I have not heard of it. And it is not isolated to Romania.

Arisztid: You are very welcome. I am not Rrom, as far as I know. I was a couple of time in Romania. I understand the Romanian language somehow. I don't understand the Romani language. Here is a book to learn Kalderash-Romani: http://books.google.com/books?id=ENqAjucuu4MC&pg=PA4&dq=%22rrom+san%22&sig=8rKrVaSsW5pUCj2oIsRr7Wpep-w
I am French and I live in Germany. But I don't have much problems with the Germans. Many of them like French people. That is not to say that some of them could dislike some other ethnies. The French are quite a mixed nation, anyway.

I have that one and it is pretty good. The problem is the non-standardization of the spelling and the language itself.
.
I am pretty hopeless in relearning my language (I spoke the Kalderash dialect) courtesy of not having anyone to practice it with for two decades and two very stout blows to the head. I have frontal lobe damage. I am only going to be able to pick up a word here or there.
.
Oh "Rrom san" is Rromanes, not Romanian. :)

Arisztid: I know. I was not 100% sure of the meaning, and I found it in this reference.
