tell me if this is excessive?

You're reading I'm constantly criticized & met with sarcasm, here on AB, because I am a police officer. So many seem to have a problem with authority/police, Why?...theres laws, break them, theres repercussions, it's not that difficult to stay out of trouble is it?
Comments
I agree.

There is the letter of the law then the meaning of the law. How you, the law enforcement officer react is the difference between being a public servant and a cop.
by slither on June 2nd, 2009
I dont think that cops become asses. I think that they start out that way and now someone gave them too much power. Law enforcement needs to be really picky on who they hire. Because, they truly are public servants, but mnay on government forget that.

Police put their lives on the line to protect us. So you who think they are "assholes" bet you dont phone the local "asshole" when you need the professionals > the Police.
by yannie on November 1st, 2009
some people are born assholes and a lot of these people are attracted to the police force.they very rarely risk there life's and spend most of there time filling in forms and sitting in a air conditioned car with a speed gun.

You are dealing with a predominately teenage audiance here. Adults tend to have a more mature opinion.
by Anonymous on March 3rd, 2010
Wow I can't believe the response to this question and it is difficult to believe the response someone would get because they are a police officer. I think Anonymous must have it right. You are probably dealing with a lot of teenager who think it is cool to put down authority.
Were I live our police are treated with respect and they earn it. If there is a horses ass among them they are few and far between and wouldn't go very far in the force.

Referring to your first sentence...you know a lot of police officers? You see the stories of officers abusing their authority. No stories about good officers doing their best? Nope...that would not be a story now would it? Bad people screw it up for good people...uh..what else is new?

Who else gets a paid vacation when they screw up or break the law? The unspoken blue brotherhood isn't good for public morale either. Many departments will automatically protect an officer even when confronted by proof of that officer's indiscretion or intentional abuse of the system. Also, the fact that the police can legally lie to you, but you cannot legally lie to them doesn't seem appropriate either.
by Rufus_T_Firefly on August 26th, 2010
I don't know where you get your information and I wouldn't know where to start anyway. If you live in Honduras or someplace I am not familiar with I am sorry. The newspapers are always covering the prosecution of police officers who break the law with intent. Any organization that would not attempt to defend a member who did no wrong is not worthy of membership. Have you ever considered the fact that there are at least two sides to a story? The police are allowed to use subterfuge, in certain circumstances, in order to find the truth. That is a little different from "lying". If the police were investigating a murder of one of your family members I am certain you would not object to their use of every tool in the box...if you answer "no" you had better explain.

"The police are allowed to use subterfuge, in certain circumstances, in order to find the truth. That is a little different from "lying"."
No. It isn't.
Yes, I understand that there are two sides to each story. The problem lies in the fact that the actual truth and the what the police tell the public are sometimes completely different.
Prosecuting one or two bad cops while so many others abuse their authority certainly doesn't promote justice. The bad cops who DO get caught are routinely punished with a paid vacation and an occasional slap on the wrist. Many of them are allowed to continue their abuse of the system. While John Q. Public is patently subject to all written laws, the boys in blue are frequently not held to the same exacting standards. That isn't justice in anyone's book.
FYI - Those same cops, of whom you speak so glowingly did absolutely nothing when my daughter was viciously raped. They knew precisely who did it, but they refused to arrest him because (in their exact words) it would be "her word against his," even though the physical and forensic evidence proved without a doubt that my daughter had told the truth. So, if they actually cared to, tried to or even bothered to use every tool at their disposal, my opinion of them would probably be much, much higher than it is. Go and live through those same experiences and then come back and tell me how you feel.
by Rufus_T_Firefly on August 26th, 2010
I did not speak "glowingly" about anyone. You are getting a little over the top. If you don't trust cops or don't like them ..I wouldn't call them. Have a nice day1

No-one likes a policeman but when they need one they expect him to be there.
by Chloe Lin on August 27th, 2010
when you are afraid you began to become aggresive.the police are completely out of control. i see them heartless but the sad thing, is the police see the crap among their own and say nothing. its the look as if someone walk in on them during sex standing around like puppets its pathetic!!the guns give them the killing power the want.they need someone who is completly seperate from law enforcment . nueroscience would begin to solve the aggressive punk police problem.no psycologist

@jaydee - It's not like Trust or not, I don't really have a choice. I could have taken the law into my own hands and put a bullet where it would have done the most good, but then I'd go to jail for violating the rapist's rights. So, yes, I do expect the cops to accommodate me when I call them with a valid reason and I expect them to do the job my tax dollars pay them to do, instead of throwing up their hands and telling me they won't prosecute my daughter's rapist because it's her word against his, despite what the DNA evidence says.
by Rufus_T_Firefly on January 26th, 2012
I don't know what juridiction you are in but in my state it is not up to the police to prosecute. The police investigate and submit a report and it is up to the district attorney or city attorney to prosecute. I have been frustrated by those decisions myself but everyone has frustrations. One thing for sure..when a victim or victims family takes a pound of flesh the prosecution has no problem with a prosecution...sadly.
by jaydee on January 26th, 2012
Oh so you have been arrested before!
by cindymh on March 5th, 2012
not all cops are bad. i have a friend thats a police officer and hes a really nice person..a cop is not an ass because he/she gave you a ticket or arrested you for doing drugs/rape/molested/killing/ and we are to follow all these rules and everyone should. no1 should go against the law. if you dont want 2 get into trouble then dont do it........this is what i dont like about them'''my brother was going to visit a friend of his and was told by an officer that he could not.then the officer asked him whats he doing in a black neighborhood?? my brother answerd the question im going to see a friend..the officer then accuses my brother of being on drugs because hes in a black neighborhood. then the officer then pulls down my brothers pants in (in broad day light)checks his butt in front of people walking by-stores around- people driving by-people looking out there window..there were othere officers there as well and they all just stood there and watched as it all went on. they were all laughing thinking it was some kind of joke...now please tell me how i can feel safe standing next to an officer because i dont know if he/she is good or bad. i should be able to trust and officer. and theres much more ive been through 2 big of a story for this. it all need to go on tv. have some kind of meeting

If all of your opinions are based on a single instance that you don't happen to like or even one that was handled horribly..or let us say criminally..you must have some convoluted points of view. My opinions are based on the majority..overwhelming majority of acts committed by law enforcement officers are superb..in my interests and professional. I have seen and witnessed a couple of things done by individual officers that I did not like. That did not stop me from making a career in law enforecment. Of all the professions we have contact with..which one does not have bad..very bad apples? Because your buddy was "pants" by a cop..you don't feel safe? You must have led a sheltered life..be thankful.
