Most residential solar voltaic systems are grid-tie systems, with no batteries. At night, you draw your power from the grid. During sunny days you will either send power to the grid, or at least stay in your utility's lowest rate tier. The down side is that a grid-tie must shut down if your lose your utility power, to avoid back-feeding the power grid. I am in an area where power rarely goes out, so that restriction isn't an issue for me.
I am in California, which now requires Pacific Greedy & Electric to pay for solar power returned to the grid, and the utility can no longer zero-out your excess generation at your annual true-up billing. I had my solar voltaic system installed in 2009, and am quite pleased with that investment.
