You're reading Why does the USA not have an official language, and what should it be?
Comments
Main original language=english. One of the most fundamental rules of democracy is "majority rules" therefore catering to minorities is unconstitutional

Im..not wrong. sorry. the senators voting it down is irrelavant. My point is that we have catered to spanish speaking people( minority) when in a democracy, MAJORITY RULES. Our founding fathers made this a democratic country, therefore, MAJORITY RULES. Therefore, catering to minorities is undermining democratic principles, and therefore unconstitutional.

There is clearly some misunderstanding here.
The USA has two main languages IN USE but.........
the USA does NOT have an official language!
Inform yourself.
How can you say - the senators voting it down is irrelevant, now please that is taking it a bit far, no?
It has absolutely nothing to do with democracy - it has all to do with a language to be officially used in government, courts etc.
I live in a country where several languages are in daily use but there is only ONE that is the official language.

I never said it was our official language, but to ignore the majority, and the majority does speak english, is unconsitutional.

What about the State of New Mexico, Puerto Rico and communities on the boarder, or my neighborhood, for example? The majority in all those places are Spanish speaking, so why should we cater to English-Speaking minority? Majority rules in favor of Spanish there? What about French speakers in northern Maine and Louisiana, or Chinese speakers on the West Coast, or...or...or...? This is why America HAS no official language, it would be UNCONSTITUTIONAL to institute that! BTW, since when did constitutionality become fashionable again? Has the Patriot Act and the Bush Tax Cuts been repealed?????? If we were to do it both English and Spanish should be official languages, that way places like Minnesota can have English first and places like New Mexico can have Spanish first...
