What do the numbers and letters on an amateur radio operator car license plate mean?

    Many things. First, you'll notice that all of them begin with either a
    "W" or a "K" followed by a number and then more letters. W's and
    K's designate all stations in the United States. The number
    (above referenced) further designates the zone/area this particular
    ham operates his base station. For instance, let's hypothetically
    take the call sign: W1RC. W=United States. 1=the Northest
    Area. RC grouped with W also tells us that this ham has been
    a ham for quite a long time. As the number of amateur radio
    licenses swelled the FCC added a third letter after the number
    (W3EBM), later turning to K as the first letter, even later adding
    a second letter before the number (KA2IOU).

    • American hams can also have callsigns starting with N and AA through AL. The number and specific letters in the rest of the callsign dont have as much meaning anymore because the vanity callsign system now allows hams to pick these characters.
