'They' personally can't, they would likely be ones who believe life evolved over hundreds of millions of years, that is there "creation" story, yours could be "the world in 6 days" creation story... To ask them that, is like us asking you "Fuse two hydrogen atoms together... can you do it? No? AHAH!!! Science must be true because you can't do it... :/

Interestingly, scientists predict that we will be able to make a bacteria from scratch within a decade or so. It's really quite exciting- we are actually on the verge of creating life!
