Since best is subjective, I'm going to go with the brand that has impressed me the most. The Toshiba Tecra line has consistently proved to be a major workhorse.
My boyfriend lent his Tecra to a friend that was going to China. The moron packed it in his checked luggage. Needless to say, it got squished. The only things that broke on it were the fan and the standby pin.
The Tecra I use is the most stable machine I've had the pleasure of working with. I'm so hard on my Windows installations that I usually have to start fresh every six months to a year. My first and current installation has been humming along for almost five years.
My final anecdote is that the year I spent professionally repairing computers, I never once had a broken Toshiba laptop to work on. I helped customers through endless misery with HP, Sony, and Dell, though.

Thanks. I have to say I didn't see any IBMs in the shop either but I haven't gotten the chance to use one for an extended time.

HP is the way to go. Very reasonably priced, durable, latest technology, lightweight, and fast. I have owned 2 HP laptops so far and they work great for me. You rarely will need to call customer service, but if you have to, their support is really great and the hold times are little.
I found some best laptop deals http://www.dealjuggler.com and http://www.dealsofamerica.com
Good luck!!
