The force of gravity is inversely related to the square of the distance of two objects.

If something is 10,000 feet above the surface of the Earth (whose diameter is 3963 miles), it is 3965 miles from the center of the Earth at the equator. That distance squared is 15,722,010.

If somethign is 40,000 feet above the Earth, its distance squared is 15,767,100. The gravity is 1.00287 times stronger at 10000 feet.
