Formula One cars, and for that matter most race cars, zigzag to "warm up" before a race for exactly that reason; to warm up... their tires that is. Warm rubber becomes stickier and allows the cars to grip the road/track. This allows higher speeds during turns without losing control and the use of more power during acceleration periods without loss of traction.

    • In addition to adding heat, it also cleans the tires.

    • No it doesn't, the warmer the tyres the more likely they are to pick up track debris
