Why do some Baptist women wear long skirts (even to swim in)?

    The reason is modesty, and adherance to Gods command to dress as women, and not look like men.

    Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

    1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

    1 Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

    The clothing of the world, or lack of it is a stumbling block for men. That is a sin for the ladies, because they are tempting the men to lust for the flesh by not covering their bodies. That does not make it all the lady's fault if the man does seccumb to the temptation, but it is a stumbling block for him.

    The part of your question about even when swimming, I have not heard of. The swimwear a lady wears must also be modest and provide adequate coverage as to not incite lust. Those are the guidelines in my church. I do not know of a lady that swims in a long skirt, but do in a one piece suit with a skirt on it that comes to mid thigh or so. I have a pool at my house and have had many church people over to swim. I have never seen a lady get in the pool fully dressed.

    • This is the essence of the Scriptural case. Some churches, not just Baptist, go to surprising lengths (no pun) with it.

    • Women at my church wear a sundress over their bathing suit if they are swimming anywhere other than their own backyard or if there is anyone else there.

    • No man can, but why should women pay for that? Let the men keep their eyes downcast to avoid lusting. Makes more sense to me. quiet demur men..shhhh. Ah just how I like it ;)

    • Gods do not exist, so holy books are only quite poor fiction and are not sensible guides to anything in reality. Tyrants often make strict rules about sex, diet and other natural impulses.

    • Deut. 22:5....I grew up an Independent Baptist, so I knew that verse would try to be used as a reason for women to not wear pants. It was only after I grew older and started studying the Bible for myself that I realized how many verses Independent Baptists' take out of context to control their people. If you use that passage of scripture then you must also look at the whole chapter and abide by those rules as well. Lets take a look at what I am talking about...Deut. 22:11..just six verses later..in the same context as this was given.."Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers(many or different) sorts, as of woollen and linen together." Ok, how come this is not preached? Why doesn't some independent baptist preacher stand this sunday and tell his congregation that it is wrong to wear clothing with different fabrics...I can just hear him now.."check your tags, is there different sorts of fabric used in your clothing? Bless God!! A christian should not be wearing this!!!" Of course you won't find this being said...Come on independent Baptists...stop trying to control your people with a verse picked out here and there and preach the whole counsel of the word of God..rightly dividing the Word of God. There are so many more important things to be concerned about..how about people dying and going to hell??

    • 1 Corinthians 8:9 is in regards to eating food sacrificed to idols? being a stumbling block to those we make worse by teaching them to act in contradiction to their conscience...2 Timothy 2:15

      1 Timothy 2:9 speaks nothing about wearing skirts but does speak of modesty but more so what He is speaking of here is the importance of the inward spiritual woman as a child of God overides the outward appearances...you must understand the disciples were now spreading the Gospel to a new church that had no direction under the old law but came out of a worship of many different gods and idols...there was alot of controversy because the Jewish nation were trying to impose many of the traditions they adhered to under the old law...we are no longer under the old law but now under Grace according to the new covenant..which touches deuteronomy 22:5...which if you understand the culture and dress back then actually both men and woman wore a dress of sorts..except the men had tassles on there ends and also they were able to gird them up from the bottom to around there thighs because they labored. Basically the real answer to this question is because of Religious tradition and nothing more. It is the way this denomination has interpreted the WOrd of God to fit there traditions..i would not say it is sinful UNLESS it becomes a stumblingblock to other christians and other children of God are treated as the WORLD or told they ARE of or from the WORLD...this is false teaching and is destroying souls. I hope this helps anybody who is really seeking the truth and pray for those bound by self rightousness not able to see past their indoctrination.
