In my experience the defining characteristic of Depression is the complete loss of hope. You feel hopeless, that the future is hopeless and that nothing will ever get discernably better. This loss of hope makes you despondent, angry, irritable, bitter and tired. Here are a couple of points that helped me out tremendously when I was in it and I hope they do you as well.
1. When we are in a bad depression, we become completely focused on ourselves. Forgive me the cliche but we really do wallow in our own depair. I found that when I forced myself to think about others I automatically felt somewhat better because the focus was no longer completely on myself. Read up on stories about people more more tragic than yourself (morbid, but it works). Try to do something (anything) for someone else - the tiniest accomplishment such as a smile or compliment for someone else will lift your spirits I guarantee it.
2. Force yourself to think positively at all times, even when it's a lie. Become conscious of what you're thinking all the time and force yourself to change the thoughts. For Example: I hate my life and I have nothing to look forward to. Change that thought to: I love my life and I'm so happy to be alive. Again, even if it's a blatant lie, you can trick your brain into changing the thought processes. Hope I helped!
