Heavy Metal can refer to metal in general, especially in forums not devoted to metal (such as this one).

Most people don't distinguish heavy metal from metal in general. So in a forum like this, I would use the two terms interchangably. If I needed to get into subgenres where Heavy Metal as we think of it is relevant, I would distinguish between them.
