What Would Happen if the Polar Ice Caps Melted?

    If the northern polar caps melted nothing would happen because there is no land mass and the ice has already displaced itself by volume. However if the southern ice caps melted the ocean level would rise 3 to 5 feet because the ice is sitting on land.

    • Captain: Think of it this way. If you fill a glass full of ice and add water and you decide not to drink it,,when the ice melts does the glass overflow. No way.

    • The sea level wouldn't change because of the Arctic ice but the salinity would significantly drop, disrupting global ocean circulation and climate.

    • Also...there is land-based ice in the north. The melting of all of the ice on Greenland would significantly change sea level.
