Do you treat people how you want to be treated? If you do, do you become discouraged enough to stop being nice if they aren't nice back?

I always try to treat people with respect and kindness.If they do not I just go about my own business and make nothing of it.

Why can't you just be a nice person? People just seem to assume that if you're being nice, then there's some ulterior motive. Of course, you're allowed to be nice if you're religious, it's just Atheists/Agnostics who aren't allowed to be nice.
