You're reading Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith, Mormon or Moroni?

All true. But it does not change our relationship with OUR God.
He is our only God, and the only one we do or will ever worship.
If he once went through a mortal existence like ours then he understands from personal experience what we go through.
If we become as he is, isn't that what every father on earth wants for his children? But he will remain our ONLY Eternal Father.

As non-members I think a majority of us tend to jump to conclusions about things- this topic especially. From what I have studied and from edndori's comment, LDS members believe they have the potential to become LIKE God. The terms God and gods are different. They do not believe they will become God one day or take his place. Heck, that would be like 15 million people becoming God! Definitely not what they believe. In no place in their Book of Mormon, or in any of their teachings, does it say they will become God or "As man is, God once was. God, man may become." The key phrase that so greatly distinguishes that phrase and the original "As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become." is "As God is" vs. "God". As far as I know and believe there is only one God, I don't think Mormons believe in an alternate God because there isn't one. As far as I can tell, Mormons believe everyone has great potential and by doing the necessary acts on earth they can become like God. If that's true, sign me up! If it's not, who cares, it's a cool aspiration! :-P
